| Text Commentary | |||||||||||||
| "Line-6 At the end of the line, after
πάλην, which corresponds to a writing area of about
five letters, the inscription has been erased by scraping. However, traces of
the letter Υ can be observed in the last part of the line preserved on
the stone. Line- 8: Ἀρ[ιστο]- instead of Ἀ-. The name of the father of Eukratidas, the person who endowed the Agon here, is known exactly thanks to a new inscription from Phaselis: Aristokritos, but in line 9 of this inscription, the name While the -kritos part is preserved, only the initial alpha can be traced in line 8. After that There is a gap of approximately three letters. Since this empty space has been severely damaged, only the traces of the letter P (rho) and the upper border remains of the following letters can be seen. It is noteworthy that the craftsman who carved the inscription on the stone was careful to give the first letters in the same order, and this For this reason, it is observed that he did not refrain from giving the letters ON and ΟΣ as ligatures in the first two lines. it is conceivable that in this line, too, he made such a compression, or that he forgot a letter (Tüner Önen, 2008, 347, no. 34)." |
